A work of genious Aug 04, 2005
By fukaguzzi The prion diseases are the most mysterious of the neurodegenerative diseases. From mad cows to crazy cannibals this disease has many forms. As a scientist myself I have ready many books on this subject. Most of them are written in a biased and lopsided way by very unprofessional people who can only see the world from their own viewpoint. This book is not like this. It covers the whole subject fairly and without bias. It is perhaps the first and only book to really treat prion diseases as a neurodegenerative disease and not as something solely to do with an abnormally folded protein. It covers all the theories and all the hypotheses. Of course the editor has his own chapter in the book but the truth is that David Brown is the true genious of the prion field. Many of his less intelligent and mediocre competitors in the field have ignored his brilliant work and have held back the field. When those arrogant men are long forgotten, David Brown will go down in history as the man who provided the world with a clear understanding of how these disease occur and how they destroy the brain. You should also look out for his other book "Prion Diseases and Copper Metabolism" (Horwoord Press) which deals with the normal function of the protein called prion. This is a field that he single handed pioneered. Let us hope that he editors (or even rights) more such great books. That way the students of truth can advance their knowledge and escape from the tergid tomes of self glorification that other prion scientists generate.
