5Fun and functional-fashionable backup drive works great  Sep 25, 2008 By Captain Rhetoric
I bought this because I have a 150 gig LaCie drive that works great and never gives me problems. I needed more space so I went with the same brand and for the one with the rubber bumpers because I am rough on equipment. I used the 1 click backup software and did not have a single problem. It took over an hour to back up my 100 GB's of data from my laptop but it was so much easier than clicking and dragging each folder, which works faster but is a pain. One click and go watch a movie once a month! I've used it about 15 times to back up some movies, etc since the main backup and have not had a problem. Buy this one.

5Great little hard drive!  May 07, 2010 By Claire Jordan "Filmmaker - "The Baroness of New Orleans""
I've used LaCie drives for years and they seem to fail far less often than other drives I've used (WD, Seagate, Maxtor.) Perhaps one of the reasons that my hard drives fail often is that I tend to be a little rough on them. I edit video, often on location, so I drag my drives all over the place. I'm hoping with it's rubberized shell, this LaCie will go the distance. I love that it is self-powered so I don't have to lug a power adapter with me. It's one of the few portable drives that is fast enough for video editing. I purchased the case LaCie Cozy 3.5-Inch Hard Drive Carrying Case 130903 (Grey) for it as well to further protect it. I'll update this review if it dies.

Update: I've used this drive for a year and it's still going strong. I'm going to upgrade to a larger capacity model soon.

PS - It always makes my day to know that people find these reviews helpful. 3Good, but read the fine print  Mar 25, 2009 By T. Benson
I love the rugged la cie. Its worked well so far, and the transfer times are pretty good for a portable HD. However, READ THE FINE PRINT! Though La Cie is a company geared toward Macs, their free online backup for a year inexplicably only works for Windows! This was one of the reasons I chose this product in the first place, but since I have a Mac its worthless. Yes, I am to blame for not reading the fine print, but still....La Cie caters to Macs. Why wouldn't they allow Macs online backup as well?

5A Satisfied Non-Tekkie  Oct 12, 2009 By J. Eassa
Let me be upfront: I am a twenty-something who works in publishing (words on paper!), still has a 2nd generation iPod, and doesn't own a flat screen. I'm so non-technological it's almost cliche.

My home iBook and work PC were housing a varied assortment of personal photos and music, and I needed a shared space to store everything once I got a new job. Thanks to a Google search, I found out that not all external hard drives can be used on both platforms and came across a few recommendation for the LaCie.

What I Like:
- There was nothing to install. I plugged this in at work (PC) and the device was immediately recognized via the USB. File storage was a simple drag and drop like you'd do with a smaller thumb drive. Same goes for my home iBook, although I did need the extra USB hookup as an added power supply.
- Easy to carry around. As an SU grad, I totally dig the orange cover. It's pretty rugged as far as personal-size devices go (could probably take more of a beating than my cell phone), but I wouldn't recommend taking it rock climbing or dirt biking.

Notes:
- Since I didn't have any problems using the device, I had no need to contact Customer Support, although it is available and the device comes preloaded with a product manual (saves trees!)
- I'm am using this at the most 101 level possible: to store my personal photos and as iTunes backup. If you need serious file backup, you'll prob want to keep reading some other reviews.

Definitely recommended for:
- People who use both PC and Mac platforms
- People who are intimidated by tech devices that are supposed to make your life easier but you always seem to be that .01% that can't get it to work.
- People who love orange
