5Good solid Back Up Drive...  Mar 15, 2009 By $GMillionaire "sgmillionaire"
I am a professional video editor and purchased this drive to give me a back up for certain show elements as well as some media that I do not use on a regular basis. It has handled all I ask of it. I wish it had an e-sata interface and would have gladly paid more for one but other then that for what it is it works just fine and matches one of my systems perfectly. I would recommend it for it's clean lines and quality.

1Eats Upper Hard Drive Every 3 Months, DO NOT BUY!!!  Jan 20, 2011 By Adam Fuller "rochskier"
I purchased this unit in June because I wanted a compact, convenient RAID storage solution for my large collection of documents, music, and videos. Since then I have had TWO 1 TB hard drives fail in the upper slot of this unit. The Seagate OEM drive failed in just 3 months. I've had poor experiences with Seagate in the past, so figured that it was another bum drive. I've had much better experience with Western Digital drives, and I installed a 1 TB drive in the upper slot of this unit.

After having two drives fail in this unit in less than six months it is pretty clear that the thermal design of this product is flawed. After going through two hard drives it is pretty clear that the provided fan and ventilation scheme are incapable of properly sinking heat from the upper hard drive.

I am a little bummed that I have to write this review because I've had good experiences with LaCie products in the past. I find this product extremely disappointing due to its unacceptable failure rate. I would advise anyone in the market for external storage to spend their hard-earned dollars elsewhere.

1Bad Drive, Bad Tech Support and Bad Warranty  Oct 12, 2011 By Charlie
Think three times before attempting to buy this brand (Sorry Amazon.. It is not you).
I wished I new how their tech support people were and how they DO NOT HONOR their warranty. and HOW they do not care for satisfying a customer.
The fact that it was designed by Paul N.. does not make it a good Hard Drive. In fact, in my opinion, the resulting quality of the drive is giving bad reputation to his name now.
I bought this drive in late December 2010 because it was advertised you could access and manage it (thru its dashboard interface) from anywhere in the world thru the internet. It turns out you cannot. They did not even include the complete technical details as to how to make this drive available thru the internet. When I asked tech support for help and the details, the tech support guys evaded my questions and tried to make me use only ftp, even though the original advertisement said you could access the Dashboard from the internet to manage the drive. This is when I realized tech support (seems being performed out of a remote country in Asia) was bad and incompetent. So I resigned to use it as a mere back up drive.
8 months after I bought it, the drive failed to upgrade its recently released new OS version 2.0.4. I spent about 12 days with tech support who gave me repeatedly false or incomplete instructions until they "concluded" it was time to make a warranty repair. They instructed me to return the brand new unit, and after approx. 20 days they sent me a refurbished one, which did not update the OS either. I ended up finding a work around on other sites as to how to upgrade the OS. Once I resolved it I decided to use the RAID 1 feature to give some reassurance that my data would be protected if one drive failed (I thought maybe way in the future). ONE DAY LATER!!!!! one of the drives failed (crashed). And the data, including the OS DID NOT continue to work as advertised either. You data and OS are not protected if one of the drives fails. I reported this issue to their unconsiderate tech support guys and they did not even try to make it right to you by giving you a brand new unit, they said they are advancing an exchange, and made me give a credit card as warranty for them sending a unit without me sending the defective one, but they have not sent it because they are waiting for other returned items to refurbish one and send it to me. Now I am still waiting for LaCie to send me a replacement unit. I am without a drive since Sep 3, 2011. They would not even give you acoupon to go buy a new unit from a store.
BAD WARRANTY SERVICE, BAD TECH SUPPORT, BAD OS, BAD DRIVE... I will not buy a LaCie Product, any, ever.

5Works great so far but had slight difficulty setting up  Sep 11, 2011 By Dan
I pulled the sleek, cool looking raid hard drive system out of the box and immediately flipped the raid switch from "big" to "safe". Bad idea because all the pre-loaded software on the drive was erased. When I plugged in the hard drive nothing happened. The only real problem here is that the instructions failed to mention anything about their software getting deleted or that you can't re-download the setup software off of the internet. It also didn't mention what to do when you switch raid configurations and the partitions get erased. Being an intermediate computer user, I was stumped about the problem for a little bit.

Finally I realized I had to initialize the drive using Windows Disk Management, and everything has been smooth sailing since. Its quite, relatively fast, and looks great.

1Warning to Mac Users: Stay away from Lacie  Sep 02, 2011 By tamjm
Warning to Mac users:

I purchased one Lacie Big drive 18 months ago, another Lacie Big drive 24 months ago. I just upgraded to Mac OS X Lion. Neither drive works after the upgrade.

The Lacie web site said that the "solution" to this problem was to revert back to Snow Leopard. Not really a solution. But I assumed that maybe this meant that a firmware upgrade or something was in the works. So I contacted Lacie support.

Lacie support told me that the "version you have now is a legacy product, there is no update planned at this time to address the 10.7 [Lion] problem."

An 18 month old, $1000+ external hard drive, is considered a "legacy product". You have to be kidding me.

I don't often write reviews. And I'm really not writing this as a whiny complaint about an unfavorable support outcome. Just as a heads up to any potential Mac users.

For a company to punt on supporting products less than two years old is outrageous. These drives should last several years at least. A company who touts it's Timemachine support, which is why I purchased the drive, needs to plan to support regular OS upgrades for years.

They said they would offer me a discount on a replacement hard drive. I'll pass and buy a 3TB Time Capsule. At least I figure that one will continue working if the OS is updated.

Frustrating. I you're a Mac user, stay away from Lacie. Ignore what they say about Timemachine support. It's not true.
