| | Description | The LaCie 2big .Dual features convenient plug & play setup for connecting the 2big to your computer via eSATA or Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Windows and Mac compatible, the 2big Dual is perfect for storing large photo libraries, backing up web servers, and for use with video editing applications. To facilitate clean, multi-stream video playback with real time effects, select FAST mode (RAID 0) for blazing-fast speed when used in combination with the latest eSATA interface. FAST mode uses the 2big¿s two SATA drives simultaneously to deliver maximum playback performance of 8¿bit or 10¿bit uncompressed SD and High Definition Video (HDV) or Digital Video (DV) formats. Featuring six different RAID modes, the LaCie 2big Dual offers ease and flexibility. Simply select your RAID level with the switch on the back, without having to make any changes on your computer. For maximum security, choose one of the three RAID 1 mirroring modes. If one drive fails in RAID 1, auto-rebuild and hot-swappable drives ensure complete security of your data. The LaCie 2big Dual¿s superior design is attractive, compact and allows for capacity up to 2TB. The heat sink metal design naturally draws heat away from the hard disk¿s internal components to help keep it cool and improve reliability. With versatile desktop configurations, such as vertical, horizontal, stacked or rack-mounted, it has a place in every work environment. System Requirements: Computer with an eSATA port with Port Multiplier support or USB 2.0 port. LaCie recommends the use of LaCie SATA II PCI-X/Express eSATA cards - sold separately, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, SP1 & SP2, Windows Vista / Intel Pentium 500MHz processor or higher, Mac OS X 10.4 or later / Mac G4, G5, Intel 500MHz processor or higher, Minimum 512MB RAM. | |

Very high quality product! Works perfectly! Dec 26, 2008
By R. Petersen I bought this drive after trying a less expensive 2TB 2-disk drive. The other, by Cavalry, was a complete disaster. To get it to function required first installing some cheap driver software on my computer that completely destabilized my Windows Vista installation. After many frustrating hours, I uninstalled the crappy drivers, disassembled the case and cannibalized the individual discs so I could use them separately as internal drives for a different computer. However, I still needed a large capacity external drive, so I ordered the LaCie. This unit has built-in electronics which allows for selecting different disc modes (several different RAID modes, as well as BIG and JBOD modes) by use of a switch on the back. Worked perfectly right out of the box, and since there was NO driver software to install, there was no possibility of damaging my OS. I've had it for about 6 months now without a single problem. Plus the case is very well designed and built, and the individual discs are swappable. This is a drive I should have bought in the first place. It cost more than that p-o-s Cavalry drive, but in this case, you get what you pay for.
Best RAID1 I've found so far Apr 18, 2009
By Christopher Burian Bought four (301256U) for work back when they were over $700 each, now they're a super bargain. The USB and Firewire both work fine with WinXP Pro. The drives keep cool, and they're in removable trays. (When is somebody going to make a nice RAID box that latches in bare drives--getting tired of trays.) We've filled these up with data, streaming 25GB per day over FW800, used them for portable storage. Rock solid over a year now. "User serviceable" with swappable drives.
At home I went cheap and bought a Calvary. The Calvary worked for USB but not for Firewire (saw the drive in My Computer but couldn't actually access it) on WinXP Home. Then the Calvary died--had some kind of internal electronic failure 13 months after buying it, no warranty coverage (so the files are still present on the bare drives inside the Calvary box, I can mount the individual drives with a USB/SATA dongle to get the data off). Will never buy another Calvary product and instead I'm shopping for a LaCie 2-big right now, deliberating between NAS and USB/Firewire for home use.

2 bad drives in a row, gave up and requested refund Jun 27, 2008
By Mars Trader The first unit arrived with a loose drive lock, it would not engage securely. Amazon sent replacement, which was sealed but not packed correctly, with a rumpled manual and used cords. Called LaCie and asked about the serial number, they admitted it was a customer return that had been sent out for sale as a "new" device! The second unit would not format for Safe 100 and overheated, fan would not come on. Tech support agreed it was faulty, but the only exchange terms LaCie offered would have me waiting until after July 4 for a replacement, and no pick up service. I say No Way - enough is enough. I would not trust another LaCie drive after this experience.
