5One of my best investments!  Nov 05, 2011 By Dame "<3"
I'm currently deployed in Afghanistan and all I have to say is that this is one of the best products I had ever purchased.
I re-imaged the drive with Windows 7 Professional to start off fresh, clean and have multi-touch features.
Ive recently ordered a 1GB RAM stick for it and still awaiting for it's arrival (excited).
(WARNING: IT HAS 1GB RAM INTEGRATED WITHIN THE MOTHERBOARD! AVOID BUYING 2GB RAM STICKS)
Touchscreen is very accurate (after calibration) and the handwriting recognition system is almost good as perfect!
You have finger or pen mode and both works perfectly. Pen mode allows you to rest your hand ontop of the monitor while writing without having any touch interruptions.
This laptop is quite the eye candy especially transforming it to it's tablet form. This item will be very helpful for me when I start college when I get back from this deployment. A lot of my sergeants loved my netbooks internal and external features and couldnt believe that I bought it for 450 bucks!
So far, Ive witnessed no flaws but theres no such thing as a perfect machine :P
The ones who gave this a low rating are nothing but complainers or very unlucky people.
Me, as a computer repairman himself, think this is a great machine to purchase!

My only recommendations are:
Format harddrive (2 or more partions) and install Windows 7 Pro or higher.
Order 1GB Corsair RAM
Order AntiGlare Screen Protectors
Order the Sticker Protector (For the outside of netbook)
Buy Angry Birds or Plants Vs Zombies. ITS WORKS FINE!

4Nvidia Settlement - Consider me impressed  Aug 09, 2011 By goosedude "goosedude"
I received this model as a replacement for my constantly ailing HP tx1000.
After months of use I have to say I am impressed... This is not your average netbook.

First things...
1. UPGRADE FROM WIN7 STARTER (I installed professional)
2. UPGRADE THE RAM TO 2GB.

It's probably helped I have not overloaded with bloated programs... Just the best essential programs and Office 2010 Professional. NETFLIX and Slingplayer run great.

The touchscreen is responsive and great for browsing... The dual-core makes a bigger difference than I expected.

Just so you can understand my comparison with an original netbook, I have an ASUS EeePC 1000h... Also upgraded to 2GB of ram and it hangs when I load more than 3 browser tabs. No issues with this model.

This model is compact and feels sturdy. The swivel hinge is not of poor quality. Battery life at high performance gives me 4 to 5 hours.

My only criticism is that it lacks some features of my hp like Bluetooth and fingerprint reader and full media capabilities (but my tx1000 couldn't handle hd video well anyway).

All in all I am impressed... It's a free replacement and great little cto netbook.

3Settlement Replacement  Jul 16, 2011 By Thomas Gettle "Old Tom"
I also received this netbook as part of the Nvidea legal settlement. It is a poor replacement for the HP Tablet notebook it is replacing, but it is better than nothing. The notebook it is replacing was completely dead.

I've upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium from the "Starter" version supplied with the unit. Why ASUS ships it with the "Starter" version is hard to understand. The touch scrreen requires the upgrade to be fully functional.

I also upgraded it to 2 GB of RAM. It is interesting to note that the available slot for a RAM upgrade is empty from the factory. There is 1 GB of RAM installed internally. this is not discussed in the available documentation. I contacted ASUS technical support to determine the correct parts to do the upgrade since it is not addressed in the available documentation. The response that I received said to use a 2 GB module installed in the available slot. They also provided the specs for the type of RAM to use. I purchased that part and installed it. At first it appeared to be working as the netbook was now reporting 2 GB of RAM installed. However, there was a problem with powering the unit on. About 50% of the time it would not start. I removed the module that I installed and the problem disappeared, reinstalled it and the problem reoccured. I contacted the RAM manufacturer as I thought the module may have been bad. After holding an email dialog with Crucial, they felt that I had the wrong module installed. Per Crucial it should just be a 1 GB module to supplement the internal 1GB of RAM. A new 1 GB module was purchased from Crucial and installed. It works perfectly and I have had no power on problems. The information provided by ASUS was incorrect. Anyone else performing this update should go to the Crucial website and us their available tools to determine the required module. I am waiting to see if ASUS will take responsibility for me purchasing the wrong module and refund the cost of it.

4Face it, you want one  Jan 17, 2012 By coppersleeve
If you are seriously considering this product my guess it is for one simple reason. You want a tablet type computer, you do a lot of typing, and for some reason you are stuck to windows. If you want a tablet-ish machine, but need to do serious office type work with it using your windows based enterprise applications and still catch the occasional video this is pretty much the only way to go. If that isn't you and you are looking for an entertainment device or don't need to use windows, get the EEE pad transformer or an Ipad. Asus has done their usual top-notch design job with this little wonder. You'll wish it was lighter. You'll wish the battery lasted longer. But its about the best we can expect from Win 7 in this form factor right now. After using this machine for two days your existing windows laptop will look and feel like a ball and chain. More powerful windows alternatives are along the lines of the impressive Lenovo x220. Sure its a powerful machine, but it also feels a bit like the battleship Bismark. The world is heading in another direction. If you are on the go, want or need to use windows, you want this thing. Would be five stars if Asus had not left it to the user to immediately upgrade it to a functional state. Microsoft should take half that blame. Based on where they are in the market they should be kissing Asus' feet and GIVING them whatever version of Windows will make this thing run for nothing. They are both cheating a little to keep the purchase price down. It will take you a minimum of 2hrs to get set up:

1) Add 1G of additional memory before you even try and use it. I wish I could add 3G more. There are good youtube tutorials on this if you need them. Its easy.
2) Upgrade Windows to home premium at minimum. Don't even try and use it without this. Some users claim clean install is essential. We've been fine with simple upgrade.
3) Install Chrome and get the Chrome Touch extension. Touch function is simply amazing. Google chrome flash implementation can be annoying, but not the end of the world. IE works well with touch also, but has a little too much stuff on the screen.
4) Change the screen resolution to something a little denser. It can handle it.
5) Teach the machine to understand your messy handwriting. Once you get to know each other there is no going back.
6) Write and draw on it. The functionality in this area will blow you away. Ipad is good for your fingers. This thing was made to be your writing pad. Use the pen/finger toggle. Use windows journal. Install a pdf markup application. If your hands are big like mine get yourself a real pen sized stylus. That pile of papers on your desk will rapidly disappear.
7) Don't be afraid to use this as your only machine. One of the guys in my office has an T101MT connected to a 1920 res monitor and runs this tiny thing on a cooling pad all day long on the company network.

5Ultimate Everyday Companion  Nov 13, 2011 By Pawel Danielewicz
The Asus T101MT EEE PC is an ideal companion for carrying around during the day. With the large 250 GB drive, it allows me to maintain the same infrastructure as on my more powerful computers, but allows me to work anywhere I go. The netbook boots up quickly even after I loaded it with tons of software. With the EEE PC's low power consumption, the work can go forever even if there is no AC power at hand. With the pen capability, I can take notes and do everything I could do on paper, with a permanent electronic record. With its VGA connector, I can connect the netbook to a projector and use it in discussions or to teach a class. Of utility is also a wired network connection, for situations when only a wired network is available.

Optimizing the utility of the netbook requires, though, investments. These can be done in progression as one gets convinced (or not) that they are worthwhile.

--Others have already mentioned upgrades to the Windows system. Here, I want to warn against 64-bit Windows. The latter system got installed by our computer department and drivers pulled from Asus site did not work well under that system. In particular, handwriting appeared on screen with a significant time lag. Currently, I am using Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.

--As others, I have upgraded right away the netbook's memory with Crucial 2GB.

--To illuminate keyboard in the dark, I suggest the tiny Mr. Brightside USB Light.

--The supplied stylus is handy, as always there, but marginal as a stylus. I use a Parker-style stylus refill within a Parker-style pen. A further option could be a multipen with a stylus insert of Rotring type, such as Pentel Write 'n Touch.

--As far as pouch is concerned, Case Logic LNEO-10 Neoprene Notebook/iPad Sleeve works pretty well. However, PC Treasures 10" PocketPro case will give you more pocket space with no excessive bulkiness. It can also stay attached to the netbook at all times.

--As a screen protector, that does not impede touch and pen capabilities and properly fits the screen, I can recommend Photodon HD Anti Glare Film listed on the Photodon site as for Asus 10.1" Eee PC 1001PX.

--For pen and touch operations get a free delightful user-written program TabletGoHome and tailor it to your needs. Given the mutitasking nature of the system, advanced touch operations are not going to work well. Correspondingly, you can pretty much discard Flicks and other such utilities. If multitouch is a priority, you should principally look for another (crummier:) system.

--On a small netbook, programs compete for resources. Bulky programs in particular can clog the system. Shareware ($5) CleanMem memory optimizer can be used to ensure that some memory is always at hand. With Cleanmem you can afford loading several large programs, open multiple web pages etc. and still have your system breathing fine. Another useful memory optimizer is included with Glary Utilities. To permanently boost priority of programs crucial to you, such as for handwriting, you can use a small free utility called Process Priortity Saver. At the same time you can suppress priority for various interfering update checkers etc.

--Into the SD slot put a fast SDHC card, such as SanDisk Extreme Pro 8 GB, and make it work as a fast access cache in read/write operations, operated by the the Windows ReadyBoost or by commercial eBoostr software.

--For handwriting into PDF a versatile and rugged program is Bluebeam PDF Revu. In contrast to others, I suggest to ditch the Asus utility PenWrite, that is supposed to eliminate hand smudges in writing. It routinely hangs up the whole system, trying to interpret the input, even when only the stylus touches the screen. Instead write in the landscape mode and avoid leaving smudges.

--Within the system, you can tweak sizes of icons to pack them more eficiently within the small screen. Given the screen ratio emphasizing width, put the system taskbar on the side. To further maximize the screen's utility, let that taskbar auto-hide and use the classic scheme for windows. For accuracy of pen and touch operations, you can increase the number of touchscreen calibration points.

--For handling windows within the small screen, you might get a window manager improving upon Windows capabilities. Free managers include Sizer, WindowMenuPlus and Chameleon Monitor. Layout of the workspace within many common programs can be tailored for the small netbook screen. The default is usually quite wasteful.

A month into my use of T101MT, the bottom strip of the screen ceased to react to touch. It took 3 weeks of turnaround to get a warranty repair. I still give this netbook 5 stars because of its tremendous functionality. At this point (Nov `11) there is still no comparable product on the market. Mar '12: I just cannot stop marveling how great this computer is. Adding memory management and optimizing workspace layout in programs dramatically reduced the drawbacks compared to a desktop.
