Cheap Work Computer Sep 03, 2011

So far so good. A computer has a lot to say about it in a review, so I will keep the pros and cons summarized and organized.
Pros - installs direct from hard drive quick, I turned it on, and 15-20 later I was surfing the web. - absolutely no bloatware - they even offered me about 8 additional software listings, but I only wanted the nero edition for burning .iso files onto cds. ( thanks for making it optional! ). However microsoft did stick in their huge windows live essentials bundle. NO THANKS! got rid of that through the control panel first thing. - works with my sony bravia HD t.v., and man HD video looks great even on a standard pin connector. ( their is a dvi socket, but I don't have one now ) - works with my sony nex5 .mts files, I can view them direct from this computer, with no de-lacing or delays. - works with premiere pro ( of course others too ), I seen no freezing up in premiere pro yet, and the video editing is fast. I think for about every minute of HD footage you export in blu-ray quality will take you 1-2 minutes. This is good, if you consider you work out anything in HD in an hour or less.
Cons - the computer has 4 4gb dual channel ram. However they ship it with 2 '2gb' ram chips. So that means once I decide to upgrade to the full 16gb allotted that I have to trash 4gb of ram? I already ordered 8gb dual channel extra from Crucial for $60 including shipping to Hawaii. But have yet to make a decision on the other ram. - the mouse and keyboard is a joke. However I guess it is good to have the old port mouse and keyboard for some time when I have to run diagnostics in bios. ( hardly happens anymore ). - no support for blu-ray writing or reading
My extras / customizations - wireless keyboard and mouse - 8 gb dual channel ram added - output to sony bravia t.v. - microsoft office 2007 suite - cs5 web premium & premiere pro

These are the best for the power, size, and price. Aug 02, 2011

So I have more than one of these now and I can say that for the money this is one of the best systems in the world literally for what it does and what it is. I looked around a lot and if you need a business machine (not for high end gaming) then this is a really perfect system. It uses very little power. About .5 amps and under 100 watts. It has one of the top commercial CPUs in the world with a CPU benchmark of 8900 from "that cpu benchmark website" :). Which is in the same territory as $1000-$2000 CPUs. It can pack in 16 GB of ram (comes with 4 GB). It is small - about 1/3 the size of a normal system. It's almost too good to be true. But it is true. It was so popular that it has been back ordered a few times but they are now flowing in. Amazon support has been flawless with the customer service and helped me every time with shipping questions. Just really happy and I love ACER and Amazon right now in a big way.
Also, the HD is 7200 RPM SATA. And the thing is super silent in terms of fans. Side note and a little trick - if you don't like blinking lights on your computer put black electrical tape over them. Solved! There is an expansion slot but do not expect to put some crazy graphics card in because that is not what the system is for (220W power supply). It's for crunching data. It's a little beast and I love it.

Really Nice Oct 13, 2011
By Philja I like that it has very compact size, about 3 times smaller then regular desktop. And I enjoy the choice of installing 32-bit Windows Professional or 64-bit Windows Professional (which I am not ready yet for now). The default installation is 64-bit system and I was needed to make some search on web to find out how to reinstall Windows to 32-bit system (You will need to hold ALT+F10 at boot time in order to reinstall the system to 32-bit. The reinstall is clean meaning you will lose any new data). This is my first Windows 7 computer and I am not happy with Windows 7. So far It does not change desktop icons pics for shortcuts. The Sleep Mode as usual does not want to wake up (disabled). The icons (shortcuts) on desktop do not remember the manual sorting after reboot. I did not felt the speed of Intel Core i7-2600K @ 3.40GHz (9,974 cpubenchmark.net), it does not feels faster then my current Intel Core2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33GHz (3,268 cpubenchmark.net with Win XP.

I've only had this for a week so time will tell but so far, so good. Below are some positives...
... very little crapware installed. I had to nuke McAfee. Then Bing kept trying to overtake my machine, but otherwise it was a very clean machine. Much better in this regard than other desktop purchases
... hard drive was divided into C:\ and D:\ 250gb each. I usually do this myself but Acer did it for me. Very nice.
... machine is tiny and quiet
... comes with an "XP setting" that allows the 64 bit Windows 7 to run older programs in XP mode. I like to run some really old software that still does the job so this is great.
