everything promised and more Aug 31, 2011
By mike I bought this laptop on a whim. It was crunch time for school and airs and porteges were sold out.
Pros : -quick cpu, good graphics -insane battery life, at LEAST 8 hours, usually more. i can stream netflix for 7-8 straight hours while surfing at the same time. with wifi off it comes in just under 13 hours. -synpatic trackpad (same brand as macbook), buttons are really nice too. -keyboard has a nice feel, bit of flex but i have no idea how or why thats bad (dont most notebooks have that?) -excellent sound quality and loud speakers -usb 3.0 -very thin
Cons : -build quality is lower than expected. it does have an aluminum lid but thats it, the rest is flexible plastic. for a $600 laptop this should have been expected.
overall, im surprisingly pleased. this is my first of what will be many acer products. i plan on getting 4gb more ram and an intel SSD and still come in well under $1k. AWESOME little machine, worth well over $600.

Best Laptop Great Price. Sep 01, 2011
By John This is currently one of the best deals for a laptop with these specs. Buying from amazon it is $479.(under more buying choices) I would recommend getting this over the 14 inch version which costs $700, unless you really want a free xbox; the only difference is .7 inches in screen space and a CD drive you will never use anyway. The second generation i3 has built in graphics and is all you really need for most daily tasks and light gaming. It feels fast, boots up in just under a minute.
The speakers have noticeably louder and richer sound than my last HP laptop which was branded with altec lansing. Battery life is also amazing, can get 6 to 7 hours streaming shows on wifi. The silver and blue color scheme is fairy stylish and with an aluminum lid it feels well made.
The screen tends to reflect glare and could have better viewing angles; but basically every consumer laptop these days has a high gloss screen, it really doesn't bother me. It's got HDMI, bluetooth and USB 3.0 which charges your devices even when the laptop is off. If you're looking for a portable low priced laptop you really wont be disappointed if you go with this one.

Perfect basic sandybridge thin and light! Sep 21, 2011
By Spencer M. Fong I wanted this computer to replace my HP DV2000 14" core2duo laptop. It is a huge step up and the speed is instantly felt. It will take any basic computing you can throw at it and not stutter..even with multiple apps and tabs open. The graphics unit is also a huge step up from my old integrated one, which was important to me because my old laptop could not handle HD playback or streaming. I tried to play "the killing floor" off steam because it's a first person shooter with an older engine but has hordes of enemies to test how much this laptop can handle. It played the game at highest settings flawlessly which is perfect for what I paid for. You're not going to be playing any of the recent call of duty's, but it will get you some decent performance on older games.
Good: - Price (479) was the best deal i've ever paid for a new laptop. - sandybridge i3 processor and usb 3.0 will get me by until I can afford an ultrabook in 2 years. - No cd-drive is great for reducing build weight (this laptop it much thinner and lighter than my old HP). - Long battery life actually takes another pound off your traveling weight since I can leave the power brick at home if I go to starbucks or the library. It's more like 5+ hrs than 8+ hrs though. - Hinge seems sturdy
Bad: - Keyborad and trackpad are off center. They squeezed an extra row of keys on the right side of the keyboard so they had to shift the normal keyboard and trackpad to the left. This often disrupts my clicking on the trackpad because the right mouse button is positioned where the left should be on my old perfectly centered HP laptop. - Vent is on the left side, where as my old laptop had it on the backside. This is the sacrifice for having a hinge that can bend back further. - 5400rpm Hard Drive. Really Acer?
Indifferent: - Reviews said they were impressed by speakers.. I was not. They're okay for a laptop this size but don't believe the reviews when they say they can fill a large studio apartment.. because they can't.

I simply adore this laptop! Sep 23, 2011
By Ha Lam I'm not a person who does reviews for anything, but I like this new laptop so much that I feel I should do it some justice and reveal how great I find it is.
First and foremost, the economical price of this laptop with all of its great specs is unbeatable. As cynical as I usually am, seeing a such a good looking laptop with a low price I assumed that the specs must be mediocre to compensate for such price. But I started to read more specs, I was quickly WOW-ed and ended up bought the thing.
Having high expectation from reading all the positive reviews, so far it did not fail me a tiny bit.
The laptop looks as good outside as it in in pictures. Starting with the screen, it's crisp, brilliant colors, and the 13.3 size screen is a treat considering I just switched over from using an EEE PC. The weight perfectly meets my threshold of holding it comfortably in one hand. The speaker bar produces good sound for such a compact laptop (I usually don't have good experience with speakers on laptop, so this is a nice surprise), the clarity is pretty decent. I used to HATE island style keyboard (came in contact during a use of the MacBook Pro), to me they were the most annoying modified feature on modern laptops. Luckily I tried to overlook that on this laptop, thanks to that I'm now a believer. The keys on this laptop feels firm under the fingers but light and quiet when pressing down on it. The mouse pad works fine for me though my sister mentioned to me that she thinks it's a bit small. I got used to no optical drive during my two years with the EEE PC, so it doesn't make a big difference whether there's one or not at this point (but to be fair, I do have an optical drive on my desktop, so I run to that in time of need). Otherwise, external optical drive are available now a day in case one really need one.
Now comes the performance feature review. I've previously owned 2 Toshiba Satellites laptops, an EEE PC netbook, and using an HP laptop for work, this is probably one of the best laptop I've used (at least, relative to others in the same line). I turned it into a dual boot with Linux. Performance is smooth and fast on both OS. Just a while before this review, I had Oracle database services, Excel, iTune, Firefox, Notepad++, MS Word, Symantec update running/opening simultaneously and they all ran seamlessly. The longest that I've ran this laptop on battery was about 4 hours something, but I finished my work before it even ran out of battery so I closed it and there were still probably 20-30% left on it.
All in all, this is one of the better laptops I found recently with such a good complete package for a very good price. So far, I'm very happy with this buy.

Awesome Thin & Light Multi-tasking Laptop - THE Best I've had Ever! Oct 30, 2011
By Kang Seok Joo
"dealmaster"
This Acer AS3830T-6417 laptop is THE Best laptop I've had, period. I have to admit, I had my skepticism towards an Acer laptop but boy was I wrong after using this for 2 months! I've had IBM Thinkpads (T60), Lenovo Thinkpad (R61i), Dell (Latitude C600, D620, etc.) in the past but while Thinkpads were solidly built, this Acer one is the BEST in the following categories:
1. Design: Elegant, thin & lightweight, Very nice / unique Cobalt Blue color
2. Performance vs. Power consumption: Intel Core i3 processor + 4GB RAM for Fast work and multi-tasking (I can easily open 9 - 10 applications running at same time including 7 - 10 MS Word + PPT + Excel spreadsheets + PDF files EACH, and it still runs FINE!). Battery Life? It lasts 4 hours easily even at this harsh multi-tasking environment! In normal conditions, it'd probably last Acer's stated 6 hours.
3. Awesome Audio: Dolby Home Theater system embedded
4. NO NOISE! CPU Fan rarely runs, if ever, so this baby is Quiet like a Baby in sleep all the time!
5. USB 3.0 port x 1 + USB 2.0 ports x 2: Future-proof! USB 3.0 port is backward compatible with USB 2.0.
6. Keyboard: Nice button feel, not too high, not to low, nothing sticks. The Page Up / Down / End buttons are laid out vertically at the right end which is a bit awkward but you get used to it quickly.
7. Connectivity: WiFi 802.11a/b/g + Bluetooth 3.0 + Ethernet port -- what else do you need? Very easy connection using Windows 7 control (no 3rd party control center crap)
8. Multi-touch: Touchpad supports multi-touch, i.e. use 2 fingers to augment or reduce webpage / display sizes like on an iPhone. Now, the touchpad DOES worn out quickly, I'd warn you -- after 3 weeks of use, I can see the cobalt blue resin flushing away -- it looks shiny in the central circular area where I touch and drag the most.
CONS:
1) The only thing it's lacking is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive which I don't use at all anyway (who does these days?) and I already have an external USB DVD/CD burner.
2) I do hate the reflective Glare 16:9 LCD Display but I found that only a handful <5% of the laptops today carry the old 4:3 Matte (Anti-Glare) displays which I thought was frustrating and wierd but you get use to that too, and you can find anti-glare covers easily on eBay if you really hate the glare.
3) The top cover edges are sharp, so the cover lid corners do get scratched out easily
4) Spec Stickers (labels) next to the touchpad are permanent but tend to "wrinkle/slide off" when my hand rests on top for a long time. It looks wrinkly now but I don't think I can rip it out w/o making it more messy.
AND, here's the final twist: Guess how much I paid for this baby? $343.99 SHIPPED! I bought it on 8/30/11 when it was on special promo discount with Acer giving 20% off on all laptops, plus Amazon giving added discount + Free Shipping for pre-ordering (code), plus I signed up for Amazon Business Visa card for add'l $40 Off, rounding out to $343.99 Delivered, WHAT A DEAL!!!
So, there you have it. I'm soooooooo happy with my purchase! I wish I could have bought a couple more to sell on Craigslist or eBay or as a gift for later. :-)
Thanks for reading!
