U46 From Asus is a solid performer for hard to beat price Nov 19, 2011
By Cristian Toader There is much to like in this package. Originally looking at a Mac 13, I realized that 13 inches is too small but a 15 inch is too heavy. Not to mention to get 8GB and a video card you need to spend 1700 on a juiced up macbook pro 15 with an i5 processor. So this is where the u46 excels. It is 14 inches on a 13 inch frame computer (1 inch thick), with 8GB of RAM, and Nvidia Gefore 540M card. All for $860. It has an i5 processor which makes short order of anything in the real of 95% of all consumer needs including gaming. If you are done something really specific, ok, look somewhere else, but for most of us an i5 processor with 8G RAM and a medium class video card is plenty. It is thin and light (although battery does have a weird hump at the end) and it can be moved easily. Battery life is great although keep in mind tht 10 hours is on low performance. Screen is really nice, and a main concern for me - its resolution is plenty. My biggest complaint is the speakers which, in technical terms, suck. Really really suck. So inconsistent with an otherwise awesome package. I highly recommend this machine for the bargain that it is, the good looks and thin frame, as well as solid performance. Are there better machines, probably, but they would be more expensive, thicker, and in the case of many manufacturers, ugly too. If the video card is a concern, get this machines, the Nvidia 540M is a good enough card to play modern games at this laptops at native resolution.

Small powerful machine with good price Nov 30, 2011
By Han Just got it for a week. I am very happy with it. This is the one to buy if you want some gaming power inside a 13 inch chasis and long battery life. Overall, very good value indeed.
Pros: Plenty of raw power to run my favorite games Small and thin chasis Long battery life High quality material Bright screen Amazing keyboard Good looking and feel of metal
Cons: Build could be better Speaker sucks, really really sucks
It is my first Asus. I am really looking forward to Asus' high reliability, if it happens. Oh, do not forget to get an SATA III SSD for it.

could be world-class but for a few major shortcomings Dec 23, 2011

U46E-BAL6 This is an amazingly good laptop, and could be a hands-down world-class world beater, except for a few inexcusable blunders on the part of Asus. So close but yet so far from being a "must-buy" Apple killer, . Capability -- GREAT. Usability -- mediocre. Ergonomics are SO crucial to the ultimate usability of a device, and cost very little to design and implement. Asus almost hit one out of the park with this laptop, and yet ended up with only a double.
THE GOOD: Speed. Let me be very clear here. This thing is fantastic. I am a professional photographer, and my Photoshop use can bring almost any computer to its knees. My one year old 3.2GHz i5 desktop with 16GB RAM and SSD OS drive is pretty good, but this U46E laptop is faster! Photoshop Retouch Artists speed test with 99 history states takes 25 seconds on my desktop and 20 seconds on this laptop! This thing is so fast that it is actually usable for my work! Physical. Very nice brushed aluminum finish, and NO glossy black fingerprint magnet! Kudos! Darker medium gray would be better, as it would not create bright reflections under some lighting conditions. Dark gray bezel around screen is perfect. Shiny chrome ASUS logo is a functional mistake. Nice shape with battery bulge in back makes it easy to hold and carry. Comfortably light weight. Good size compromise. As big as it can be while still being small enough to use on an economy class airplane fold-down seatback tray.
The battery lasts long enough for any domestic flight, and even a transatlantic flight, with moderate use. Good Wi-Fi adapter. Seems to be sensitive and connect very quickly. I have not yet tested its "N" speed. Included built-in optical drive is a nice and helpful bonus in a small lightweight laptop like this. But it should include current technology Blu-ray read capability for hi-def movies and instructional videos. VGA output is great and essential, as many current projectors have only a VGA input. HDMI port is appreciated and essential. SD card slot is appreciated and essential.
THE INEXCUSABLY BAD AND UGLY: Worst touchpad I have ever used, and I usually prefer touchpads as my input device of choice. I have never had any trouble with touchpads, but this one is killing me. No matter how I adjust the settings, it is always misinterpreting my moves and touches. It is always picking up palm brushes (no matter how I adjust the settings). It is always misinterpreting my touches as taps (no matter how I adjust the settings). I usually love touchpads, but this one is a disaster. The keyboard is not backlit, and should be. The feel and layout are pretty good for a chiclet keyboard. In fact, this is the first chiclet keyboard that I have found tolerable. Horrible glossy TN screen. Needs to be matt finish IPS. Laptops are usually used in environments with uncontrollable lighting and therefore need anti-reflective finishes. A machine that is fast enough for use with Photoshop needs an IPS display of appropriate quality, for which I would gladly pay. Only 1 USB 3.0 port. Needs at least 2. Also should have eSATA. A fast computer like this needs to able to get data into and out of it, and to transfer data from one device to another. When traveling, there is no gigabit Ethernet connectivity, and Internet is dreadfully slow. A small external hard drive is what I always use. And that drive MUST be USB 3.0 or eSATA. Only has one (right side) speaker. I tested 3 different copies of this laptop, and sound only comes from the right side. I plugged in headphones and both channels are working fine, so the problem is the speakers. The laptop keeps changing the power settings away from where I set them. An annoying pain. Asus, TEST your work!!! The laptop keeps losing its windows display color calibration. A very annoying pain. Asus, TEST your work!!!
OTHER: This has WiMAX, but I don't know what good that does me. I'd like it to take a SIM chip so I can connect directly to 3G or 4G service, worldwide. Does not seem to have Bluetooth, which preempts the use of a Bluetooth headset. I'd like a fingerprint reader lock.
Bottom line: If this were a finished and proper product, and properly addressed all of my suggestions and complaints above, I would gladly pay $100-$200 more and buy 3 of them. One for each person in my office. But as it is, it is just not a compelling buy. Too many shortcomings that hurt its overall usability as a work tool. And Asus' biggest blunder is the touchpad. It needs to be as good as the best out there, including Apple. Penny wise and pound foolish. Close, but no cigar!
What's great about it: Fast, good size, long battery life. What's not so great: worst touchpad I have ever used. This product is... A nice compact size, fast enogh for a pro with photoshop. About me... Budget conscious, Business professional

Pretty good Dec 13, 2011

My HP laptop died so I needed a new laptop real bad. I never had any problems with HP. That laptop lasted me a long freaking time.
This Asus laptop is amazing. I love the small size and the texture of the outside makes it look really cool. There are few problems with this computer, but a couple I think are definitely worth noting.
The speakers/sound SUCKS. When the volume is turned up all the way, I can still hardly hear unless the room is absolutely quiet. I usually just resort to earbuds.
The bloat-ware is difficult to remove. Some of the programs just don't want to get off my computer and other programs really slow it down. I spent a lot of time clearing out stuff I didn't need, and there is still stuff on this thing that I haven't been able to figure out.
Other than those things, this laptop has been awesome. I really like it and hope it lasts me a long time.

Worth every penny Dec 21, 2011
By Satisfied+ Okay, read all the reviews and decided I wanted one. Plenty of bad reviews by companies and lots of good ones by individuals. This is definitely not a zenbook, but it is a very powerful little ultralight. It weighs in at what a 13" should and with the exception of the oversized 8 cell batter(not so big as to detract from the overall appeal) it comes in at an inch pretty much all the way around. Closes flat, a must have for me, excellent opening angle on the screen, wish they had a matte variant of the screen, but asus did put a very good looking screen on these babies. I seriously can't tell the difference between the 1080p on my dv6tqe and the 720p on this laptop, the 14" actually looks a little sharper in my opinion. Speakers suffice, but seriously now, its a laptop, buy some freaking headphones if its that important to you. Keyboard is amazing, typing is so smooth I don't even miss backlighting on it. Trackpad is touchy with regards to the palm of your hand brushing it, and buttons do have a "cheap" feel to them, but all in all I can deal with it; took the multi-touch tutorial and when you get comfortable with it you won't need the mouse buttons. I like the asus standard overclocking settings, and 10hr battery life is incredible. I would suggest this computer to anyone. Its light, its thin, its portable and powerful and looks nice. I think the next gen should have an all-metal body versus metal uppers, but I have owned several asus computers and the plastic will last much more than sufficiently, you'll WANT to replace the computer before you have to. Tons of bloatware, but not a problem in reality. Last two changes I would make, ditch the F key bar for multimedia controls already, and maybe a backlit keyboard. Otherwise, this computer is amazing.
