4Big improvement over UL Series, one of the best laptops in its class  Feb 10, 2011 By Stuck
Update 3/4: Still loving this laptop, very fast and the battery life is amazing. Just found out that this laptop is the PC Magazines Editors Choice for Mainstream laptops, beating out the HP Envy and Macbook Pro! That should attest to how great this laptop is.

Update 2/23: After doing some research I found out that this indeed does have Turbo Boost, but it's not as easily accessed by the end user, it's now in the BIOS instead of a software option. It is auto enabled when you switch to High Performance or Entertainment mode which boosts your CPU to 2.9GHz vs 2.53GHz (Verified with CPU-Z)

I also had a little trouble with some of my older games running in FAST FORWARD, as in cut scenes were going super fast, units moved way to quickly, etc... All you need to do is update your Nvidia drivers and those issues are sorted out.

The new Webcam (compared to the older UL series) now works with Skype and looks much, much better.

Original Review:

I have been using the laptop for about 4 days, Amazon unfortunately did not have the best price so I purchased from a different retailer but felt that I would provide my experience here.

I had been using a UL Series laptop for around a year and a half and when I discovered the U Series coming out soon I felt that it was time to upgrade, to say the least I am very happy that I did.

Build quality:

It's great for the price range this laptop is in. Minimal plastic/glossy surfaces, and the Aluminum shell is very nice and doesn't gather fingerprints nearly as much as glossy surfaces do. Palm rests are solid and look great (brushes aluminum look) and the Left and Right click buttons feel solid.

Improvement over the UL Series:

The biggest gripes I had with the UL Series laptops were the very bad viewing angles for the screen, the horrible dimpled track pad/clicking buttons, and the 80% glossy surface that picked up fingerprints extremely quickly. This new U series addresses all of those problems. The screen is much, MUCH better than my old UL laptop (UL50VT), and the viewing angles are fantastic. The new smooth track pad is much easier to use, and the clicking buttons are much easier to press and are a little bit quieter. Most of the glossy surfaces have been replace with "brushed aluminum" looking plastic that don't show fingerprints at all. Another issue I had was the graphics switching seemed clunky on the UL Series and this new U series switches graphics much smoother/faster. The webcam also works a lot better. The laptop is a bit lighter.

The keyboard has no flex when typing normally, but if you press down on it hard you can see a flex happen. I don't see a situation when you would need to press on the keys that hard but I guess this is an issue for some so I wanted to point that out.

Performance:

The dual core i3 is very fast and runs programs great, standard 4GB of ram is perfect for this laptop, and the built in graphics handle normal tasks and HD video fine. The discreet GeForce GT 425M handles games fantastically. As pointed out before, it runs Dead Space 2 (which is fairly graphics intensive) very, very well even on Ultra settings. The normal hard drive works fine, about 35 seconds to boot and once Windows is fully loaded (about 20 seconds) programs open very fast. I installed a SSD on day 2 and now the laptop boots in ~10 seconds, and Windows is fully loaded instantly. The laptop is extremely fast with either an HDD or SSD. The speakers sound great for a laptop.

Battery Life:

Using Power Saving mode with the screen adjusted to 90%, I get around 7.5-8 hours of battery life with the normal HDD. 8-9 with an SSD. In high performance with advanced graphics turned on and screen adjusted to 100%, I get around 4.5 hours of battery life. 5 hours with an SSD.

Some notable cons:

Battery life isn't as good as my UL laptop which gets around 9 hours in battery saving mode with 90% screen brightness. (normal HDD)

---> My UL Laptop came with "Turbo Boost" which overclocked the processor by 30%. This laptop doesn't include that feature. The i3 works fine though at the stock clock rating. <--- This does come with Turbo Boost auto enabled when set at High Performance or Entertainment mode (see update)

The laptop runs a little bit hotter than my UL laptop.

The laptop has a boxier design compared to my UL laptop, but it still looks great to me.

The UL Series came with a OS Recovery DVD, these new U Series don't come with one so you have to make your own, takes about 3 DVDs and about 1.5 hours. The included Drivers CD is also outdated but there is an electronic one stored on your laptop with fully updated drivers that you can burn to a DVD for later use.

The lid doesn't open as smoothly and flexes a bit if you don't open it from the center. If you open from the center it works fine.

There are two speakers installed: One on the left side of the laptop, and one in the center. There is no right side speaker, it doesn't change the listening experience in my opinion, but it is kind of a weird design decision.

Annoyances:

Quite a bit of crapware installed. Easy to get rid of though. THIS LAPTOP COMES WITH PLANTS VS ZOMBIES PC VERSION! I was very excited to see that :) (Not an annoyance but it's bundled into the crapware so be careful not to uninstall it.)

Thanks for reading my review, and good luck.

4Almost perfect!  Mar 02, 2011 By Ellistrae
My second asus as I just retired my old G51 and my friend that now has it is very happy. This is a beast for the price, the material and workmanship is much better than some are saying. Yes there is some flex, but come on it is a tiny rig that does it all. The keyboard is comfortable even with th little flex others are talking about, the truth is asus keyboards in general have flex at least the ones I have used.

For the size and what else is out there, this really tops them all at this price range, with it had a backlit keyboard, but other than that I am sure everyone that buys one will be happy. Great performance, great battery and amazing size.

Spend today really putting this thing to the test. Gamed on it with Medal Of Honor Special Edition and Far Cry 2. Medal of Honor was simply amazing on this system, smooth with all details on High, Far Cry same thing but graphics on Far Cry were nothing compared to Medal of Honor but that is not the systems fault of course.

Added all my software, programs ect....CS4 smoked on this machine, I edited a 15 min vid and encoded it all without a hitch and very fast.

After all of this the only thing I can say that is a negative is that the power light is always on and actually very bright, it is a little annoying when gaming, but I am sure in time I will get use to it.

I read somewhere that the light was to change to blue or something like that when the graphics cards switched to the Gforce, however that does not happen in my case. A blue light would help a lot during gaming with low light situations.

The screen is actually very good for the price of the machine, playing HD vids are sharp and the play back is flawless.

Still my only major gripe is I wish it had a back lit keyboard but I knew it didn't when I purchased it from Amazon.

Don't hesitate ad to the card, it is a fantastic machine and there won't be any major disappointments.

4Perfomance, portability, and great battery life.  Feb 17, 2011 By Victor Snow
My last four laptops have all been Asus and they've never let me down.

I'm quite happy with my U41JF. It's light, fast, has amazing battery life, and has a nice bright screen, all at a great price.

The i3-380m in here is faster than you'd think. The Super Hybrid Engine, which you can disable via the bios, overclocks the CPU to 2.9Ghz. Quite a nice boost.

The Nvidia 425M is excellent and an great overclocker. I can clock it well over 435M speeds with no problem. With the Super Hybrid Engine setting enabled and a good OC on the 425m, I've even made it over 9000 on 3dmark06. Your mileage may vary, of course. For times when you don't need that level of performance, the integrated Intel HD kicks in and gives around 9 hours in Battery Saving mode while web surfing.

Build quality is good for it's weight. The lid is solid, especially if you open from the center. The flex that is often mentioned in the keyboard isn't that bad. I don't notice it while typing on it. If it bothers you, a bit of double sided tape under the keyboard will fix it.

The screen is bright with good horizontal viewing angles. Vertical viewing angles aren't quite as good, but you can tip the screen up or down to fix that.

Speakers aren't great, but adequate. I have good external speakers and nice bluetooth headphones if I need better sound.

Laptops like this are why I buy Asus. As long as they keep making 'em like this, I'll keep buying 'em.

5ASUS U41JF-A1 Review for Gamers  Feb 04, 2011 By Axelay
Just got this computer to replace my older laptop, its wonderfull, i installed Dead Space 2 the latest game and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, both work flawlessly.

Dead Space 2 running on very high settings in native res no prob.

same with need for speed.

great battery life i got 9h35mins on my first charge in battery saver mode. will be great when im not in premium class with the wallplug while onboard the airplane.

overall very satisfied with this laptop.

my only gripe, same as usual i had to create my own recovery disks(recommended), be warned i needed 5 blank DVDs to create my recovery, and it took 2 hours to create, as usual you can recover pc with the built-in harddisk recovery if you dont want to create a backup, but be warned i recently went thru the pain of hardrive failure, and i was unable to recover my original laptop software hence hours of reinstalling and finding drivers.

back to playing some dead space 2..

5Fraternal Twin of the MacBook Pro!  Feb 07, 2011 By father.mike2011
The only thing I can say about this laptop is WOW!

On my first charge on the battery saver mode, it stuck out over an amazing 9 hours! The keyboard is incredibly comfortable and the screen is nicely wide and bright-- n.b. you can adjust the brightness to your desire! It's phenomenally fast, it starts up in about 5-10 seconds and installs programs and downloads much faster than expected. In under an hour I was able to download Google Chrome, Skype, all my Microsoft Office programs (Word, Powerpoint, and Excell), and even my internet security system. While on the subject, get Norton Anti-Virus 2011, it's number 1 in my book, some people (Store Associates) will tell you Kasperski is the best and that Norton is the worst, but in my opinion, there is a reason they push a product that is $20-$30 more expensive (greater store profit = salary raises - the law of retail.) My family has been using Norton for years and we have never had a virus or computer crash. It's quick and smooth and stays out of the way unless something is really threatening to the computer.
Back to the ASUS U41Jf-a1. It weighs about 5 pounds and measures just under 1 inch. The Processor speed is 2.53 GHz. Do not be turned off by the fact it is an i3 and not an i5 or i7 processor. Its an i3-380 Intel Core Processor, very powerful, especially for a laptop computer this size. Dimensions are 13.0 x 9.5 (length x width) giving way to a 14 inch screen with good size black rim around it (about 16in in total diagonal length.)
I would equate this to a MacBook Pro. Fast, thin, light, ultra-portable, and has the stylish aluminum finish that makes it really attractive. If you want a computer, and don't want to spend a fortune, Asus U41-jf-a1 is the way to go! I literally would dub it the fraternal twin of the MacBook Pro!
