5Good, so far.  Jul 31, 2011 By T. X. Tran
Very good laptop for it price, super fast, run high end game like a champ. One thing though, got my first bluescreen of death after 20 hours of having this laptop; first, everything went non responsive, then lag, then can't even shut it down, then bam, bluescreen. But I have faith in this, hopefully everything will work smoothly from here on out. I'll post an update after 15 days to tell you how it goes.

UPDATE:
After 15 days, well a little over 15 days, everything are still running smoothly. This baby is really bang for the bucks, seriously! :)
Will keep ya'll posted if any issues arises.

Still running good. Except, if I put it into sleep or hibernation mode, 90% of the time when I resume my session it would start to get laggy, then can't even move the cursors, then freezes. So now, I just turn it off and back on when I wants to use it. Also, for an expensive laptop like this, their speakers really sucks. My cheap Dell laptop got speakers 10 times louder than this one.

It's still running! For gamers, this machine runs great on an above average graphic setting on an online game called Dragona Online, but it will lag on max setting. Will update once again once Tera Online comes out!

3Awsome while it lasted.  Sep 09, 2011 By Sed
I bought this computer after doing extensive research on some comparable machines for the price. Honestly, i couldn't find one. It has all the power of a high grade desktop in a laptop. The design of the laptop is very well done with the way the heat flows out of the back. And the screen is a very large, very crisp display. It has an extra socket for another RAM card (only about a $30 upgrade). As far as gaming goes, WoW runs at 45 fps in Ultra (in org), CoD Blops runs at about 37-40 fps in ultra. There is no game that I have played that the machine can't run.

The reason I gave this machine a 3 is because of the following. The camera didn't work (not a big deal), The BIOS was out of date when I received it (easily corrected). Something a little annoying is the "NUM pad" is just duplicates of the top number keys which is bad for both games that need key binding and for people who need to use the Alt-code keys for other languages.

Now, this is more of a personal reason, but my laptop died after 2 weeks of use and I am currently awaiting it's return from Asus. The support line was surprisingly fast at answering, but the turn around time is a crazy 14 business days (more depending on part replacement shipping) unless you pay to have it expedited. When i asked what happened to my laptop they told me "We couldn't disclose that information to you." That perturbed me a bit so I requested a new laptop. To no surprise they said they couldn't do that. I hope I experience no more problems when I receive my laptop.

5Beautiful Laptop, Incredible Value  Aug 27, 2011 By Braden1996
Pros:

First off I would like to start off stating this a beautiful computer; It is just an amazing design. While the appearances of the Notebook was quite important to me, it did not take precedence over performance; this laptop performs admirably in all applications varying from Games to benchmarks to everything else. All the games I play are easily maxed by this beast of a laptop (Or should I say desktop replacement). The thermals on the laptop are by far the best I have ever seen for any notebook of this class; the average cpu temp averages around 30 centigrade idle and reaches a max of around 60 centigrade when being stressed by Prime 95(Which is between 140 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit). The area above the hard drives do get warm when being used constantly (The hard drives are under and to the right of the track-pad, but the temperature actually comforts my hand and does not annoy me). The area above the gpu does get slightly warm, but it is un-likely your hand would be placed there (Between the main keys and the numpad). The cooling system is incredibly effective while being completely in-audible. The only thing I can ever hear is the Optical drive when being used (Which is very rare for me). The keyboard is also spectacular, I have yet to experience a missed stroke (I am an above average typist at about seventy words per minute); the track-pad is also nice, but I rarely use it. The screen which is Full Hd looks amazing and is incredibly crisp. The wireless is also superb for at home use or elsewhere. This is an amazing Portable Desktop that performs amazingly. I highly recommend it to any person in search of a Desktop replacement/ gaming laptop. This presents one of the highest values in this market.

Cons:

The biggest con is likely it's shear size and weight, but that is also it's most significant positive since you have the very large, crisp screen. The speakers are generally loud except in select programs where the volume is lower (Like Assassins Creed 2 even when the game and system volume is maxed). while the Thx Trustudio software does increase the volume somewhat, those quieter programs are still quiet unfortunately. One thing that a lot of people may dislike is that the screen is glossy, I personally do not mind since I rarely notice any glare because I am generally inside with my computers. No true cons exist for myself, this is an amazing laptop.

Other:

Great Laptop/ Desktop replacement. I use it for lan parties and vacationing and some home use, but I generally use my desktop. If you buy it and intend to move it I highly recommend a large backpack to Move it (Very large, the one I got struggles to fit it). It also ships with two partitions one main one and one for a backup, for some odd reason the partitions were set up so that the backup partition was about double the size of the main so I just used Easeus Partition Editor and corrected this. This reminds me, the laptop did not come with a recovery disk, so I suggest backing it up with the included partition or making a recovery disk. I hope this review was helpful.

3Perfect machine, except for the crappy touchpad driver  Sep 25, 2011 By Christian Hansson
I actually purchased this machine as a development box, not as a gaming box, mainly because I wanted a SILENT and powerful machine. The machine is a bit heavy, but for people my size, (6'3", 230lbs), 9lbs more or less does not really matter.
The machine has met all my expectations, delivering a fast machine, lots of RAM, great screen, and it is S I L E N T (for a PC Laptop), and the keyboard and palm rest makes it very comfortable when one is coding for 12 hours straigh.

HOWEVER, I cannot belive the utter piece of garbage touchpad they included in this. I am not sure what the manufacturer of this touchpad has to black mail ASUS upper management with, but it has to be something juicy.

The touchpad starts off ok, but after a few hours, it goes "wonky", i.e. the pointer studders, it moves in random directiosn when just pulling your finger in a straigh line. I tried updating both BIOS and touchpad drivers to the latest avaialble on ASUS's website, to no avail. When it goes wonky, the only way to fix it, is to do a complete shutdown.

The only solution to making this semi usable, is to DISABLE the driver software, and just have Windows see it as a PS/2 compatible mouse. Its still annoyingly over sensitive, but at least it is working.

If it was not for the piece of garbage touchpad I would have given this a 5 star rating.

4Amazing Notebook But Not For Everyone  Aug 26, 2011 By Chris Lefebvre
I bought this mainly because I wanted performance and advanced features and I wasn't disappointed. I build my own desktops and this notebook performs on par with my i7 desktops. With a Sandy Bridge i7 2630QM cpu; 12GB of DDR3 1333; an Nvidia 560M; 17.3 inch full HD screen; both analog 15pin video out and HDMI; 2M Webcam; USB 3.0 port; 3 USB 2.0 ports and Bluetooth built in this computer has everything that I need.

I love not having to give up a USB port for an external mouse receiver and the keyboard is large and well laid out.

It should be noted that this system comes with a Seagate Momentus 750GB hard drive which I immediately replaced (without even powering the system up) with a pair of Western Digital Black Edition Scorpio 750GB drives. Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 750 GB SATA 3 GB/s 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Internal Bulk/OEM 2.5-Inch Mobile Hard Drive These are far superior drives to the Momentus and Western Digital claims "Desktop class performance on your notebook" and these drives have a five year warranty like all Western Digital Black Edition drives and I highly recommend them. Please note that I can't speake to the performance of this system with the original Seagate drive.

Now for the "Not For Everyone" part, I love this laptop but it's big and much more beefy than other 17 inch notebooks and at 9.4 pounds with the battery compared to say an HP DV7-6195US (which is somewhat comparable to this machine) which weighs only 6.72 pounds. So that makes this laptop more than 3 pounds heavier than other average 17 inch laptops. Also this laptop is wedge shaped and bigger in the back than the front, a little less than 1.5 inches in the front and about 2.5 inches in the back. This means that it will not fit in every 17inch laptop bag. I bought a really nice Wenger Swissgear bag and was disappointed to discover this would not fit due to how big the laptop is in the back and I had to order a different bag. Also the power brick for this machine is just that; about the size and weight of a brick.

If you keep these things in mind and they don't bother you then this is the notebook for you.
