5Recommended  Aug 02, 2008 By M. K. Buike
I bought the Asus EEE PC 900 XP a week ago. I've significantly changed the programs loaded, taking off what I won't use and putting on a couple other programs. I uninstalled MS Works and Star Office and installed only what I'll need of Open Office. I think I'll use it mostly to take notes (usually using just Notepad) and connect to the internet when I travel.

As with our other XP computers, there is no backup utility installed. So had to fuss with putting that on, backing it up. My geek husband also made a recovery file on a thumbdrive.

It has run nonstop since purchase on both wireless and ethernet as well as on power and battery. Battery got to 30% after 2.5 hours. Not too good but I expect to mostly use it on power. It does noticeably slow down on batter, too.

Overall, I am VERY happy with it. I have small hands so I can actually touch type on the keyboard but it is very small. I love the 2.2 pounds for travel. Weighed it myself and it actually comes in at 2.02 pounds or 980 grams.

Be sure to do a bios update. I bought a 16 gig SD HC (high capacity) card. It wouldn't work at first. Then I discovered and installed another bios update that fixed it. So I've doubled the memory. My older desktop can't read the SDHC, though. I either use the home network or an 8 gig thumbdrive to transfer files and programs.

2Not As Listed  Nov 11, 2008 By Lenny J. Zappa
This specific model does NOT possess the wonderful Asus SSD that makes the other EEE products so quick (even though they claim it does. I confirmed this with ASUS directly).
It has a 16GB SD card soldered in place. That means it's read/write speeds are ABSURDLY slow and this thing behaves like a laptop from the dark ages.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS MODEL.
Purchase one of the models with 20g (they actually have a 4GB SSD from which the operating system runs, making them WAY faster for a small price difference.), or a 901.

4Very cool and practical; a traveller's dream  Aug 26, 2008 By Charles in Montreal
Perfect travel computer which is what I bought it for. Likes: Comes complete with XP, Works, etc and is ready to go; Easy access to internet anywhere; quiet; super cool; comes with sleeve which is also nice. Great for mobile web surfing, presentations, note taking, etc. Takes a bit longer to boot than I would like and the keyboard takes some getting use to but both are manageable. The power bar is also fairly compact. A great value for what it does. Takes away the stress of toting a heavy computer filled with key stuff on the road.

5AWESOME COMPUTER!!!! note to all: format the 'hard drive' as FAT32  Sep 06, 2008 By J. A. Adams "Mr Moo"
This laptop is awesome for school!!! i can run Matlab, autocad, maple, office. great for any student that does not want to break his/her back.
One thing. The "hard drive" (okay, the flash ssd, you get the idea), anyways, the hard drive comes with XP installed on a NFTS partition, and it DOES run slow. The FIX for this is to format the hard drive as FAT32 and reinstall XP.

You will need a windows XP cd (not the recovery disk from asus) and if you have a external cd / dvd drive you can just boot the eeepc from the CD (press "Esc" a bunch of times on the start up screen, then select your dvd drive).

if you dont have one you will need a 1Gb at least flash drive. and follow these instruccions:
http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/installing-windows-xp-from-usb-thumb.html

once you get your flash drive with XP ready you must boot from it and push Esc and select to boot from flash drive and press '1', and every time after that press 2 until windows is finalized installing

This is for both methods, booting from CD or flash drive:
at the blue screen installation mode (text mode) erase the partitions and create a new one, then format it using 'quick FAT32"

so yeah, awesome PC, but need to fix it to make it usable.

4great little computer!  Jul 25, 2008 By Austin Grace
The only reason it did not get 5 stars from me is because of the keyboard and it is a little slower than i expected. other than that, this computer has taken the place of my dell latitude d610 from 2 years ago with 1.86 ghz processor 80 gb harddrive and a gig of ram. all that was no prob to give up for the portability of this machine.
and another grype with this machine is the wireless is weaker than the wireless on my dell. i have no idea why but it is doable. i may reinstall the drivers for the wireless but i'll get used to it. i think it is a smaller computer has a lot to do with it as well. the speakers sound decent for the size of the pc. the webcam works well and the mic is decent as well. now, i am visually impaired and use a screen reader. i was a little worried how this machine would handle it but it does well. the thing that drew me to this machine is it's size. i can't believe it. even 8 days after owning it. when i pick up my other laptop i am amazed i used it for 2 years and went through a semester of college with it. this eeepc defanatly has replaced the dell in all reguards. they say it is recommended for a second laptop but it is my number one. the battery life is below par in my book. i am searching out a better battery for it. it is decent for a machine this size but i think they could have done better.
now it's time to hunt down a good external dvd burner for this computer.
my advice to you is either have a good external harddrive on hand or get an sd card. believe me, if you are like me, you will need it.
overall, this computer is a good buy for less than 500 dollars. i enjoy it a lot. it has it's flaws but the good outways them.
