Great little drive Jan 07, 2010

I put this into an older HP laptop (Pentium 4-M, 2GB RAM) replacing a 5400rpm spindle drive, and it runs like a new PC. I installed Vista to see how it would run and decided to keep it on there. Vista is running perfectly snappy in this older laptop thanks to this hard drive. The size makes it a little prohibitive, especially for people who like to download lots of "stuff", but Vista, Office 2007, IE8, Norton Internet Security, and a host of plug-ins are running perfectly fast on this 3+ year-old laptop.
Pros:
-Fast
-zero config problems
-IDE interface (I consider this a Pro because IDE SSDs are hard to come by)
Cons:
-Price/Gig, even when compared to other SSDs. I understand SSDs are more expensive than spindle drives, but IDE SSDs are even more so. Two hundred bucks for less than 64GB of useable space is a little silly, but at least I was able to breathe new life into an older and otherwise less-than-useful laptop.
Time will tell how it holds up over the months and years, but so far, I am very, very happy with this drive and I would definitely recommend it. Pretty soon, SSDs are going to become a lot more widespread and will be the upgrade of choice for breathing new life into sluggish PCs and Macs.

to everybody:
that has bought or is going to buy this product, i cant speak for all of u but i didnt have a problem with installation or features etc... i received the product, i installed it, turned on my laptop, i had my cd xp installation disk, in the cd drive, i also made sure my bios was going to start up on my cd drive with xp disk, and from the the disk fired up, i had no problem installing, my xp sys, i formated the new drive and after that itstarted to install and it was pretty fast im happy with it the drive, its kinda costly but other then that it kicked butt on my reg old HD that would take foreeevvverr.... with a new installation... ughhh
i clocked my boot time from the moment that i pushed the button and the laptop came on till the xp desktop was on display w/icons etc...
now maybe there was still minor programs starting in the background.....but for the moment that i seen visually that there was no movement in the screen thats when i would stop the timer... here are my times
old HD-boot time till all icons were on desktop display-- 1:32secs
new HD-boot time till all icons were on desktop display-- 28-30secs yes i couldnt belive it myself....
old HD-shutdown time 1min
new HD-shutdown time 10secs
now i know that starting and shutting down is little of importance but over all it made my laptop fast and im happy with the results.
i have a old ibm thinkpad w/700mhz processor, 512mb ram, so, its old but i use it for school and getting on line when im there, it does the job.....
i hope my info has been helpfull.. as far as some of u that have had problems well, i hope that u are able to resolve them.....

I tried this IDE SSD in my old IBM (Lenovo) T41 laptop PC, and it fit and worked. It loaded Windows XP SP2 including formatting with blazing speed. I just sat here and giggled as I watched it go. However, I've had inconsistent experience with it now that my normal complement of programs has been installed. Some activities happen fast, but the PC hangs a while during other activities; often minor ones like closing or minimizing a window. I have no idea what is causing this, but will supplement this report as I gain experience with the drive, and solve the problem if possible. Personally, I think something is wrong with the drive at this point. I will call Transcend and see what they say.
