Description

This up-to-date and comprehensive electronic book on CD-ROM provides the best collection available anywhere of reports and documents on traumatic brain injury (TBI), with particular emphasis on military and veterans issues. This extensively researched collection includes material from the medical departments of the Department of Defense (including the DoD Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury and Wounded Warrior Program), Veterans Administration, and CDC. There is extensive coverage of TBI, mild TBI, concussion, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and blast injuries. Authoritative documents provide detailed and practical information on assessment, symptoms, treatment, management, and much more. VA documents from the Evidence-based Synthesis program (Assessment and Treatment of Individuals with a History of Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder 2009) and the VA/DoD Evidence-based Practice Series (Management of Concussion and Mild TBI, 2009) are reproduced. Included in this collection is a reproduction of the Veterans Administration (VA) Independent Study Course on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This independent study presents an overview of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) issues that Primary Care practitioners may encounter when providing care to veterans and active duty military personnel. After completing this independent study, participants will be able to: Identify the epidemiology and the nature of TBI; Describe concussion management and treatment of mild TBI; List the rehabilitation process for a Veteran with TBI; Identify medical and physical problems of Veterans with TBI; Identify cognitive problems for Veterans with TBI; Recognize emotional and behavioral problems for Veterans with TBI; Explain TBI in the Elderly and Aging with TBI; List the issues and impact on the TBI survivor and their family; Describe the issues related to driving for a TBI survivor; and Describe the VA TBI System of Care. As a result of this program, clinicians will have a broader base of knowledge with which to provide effective care to patients with TBI and a better understanding of patients who experience this condition. Drug treatments and dosages provided in this study guide should be double-checked prior to prescribing therapy. Contents include: Epidemiology and the Nature of Traumatic Brain Injuries; Concussion Management: Sequelae and Treatment of Mild TBI; Rehabilitation of the Veteran with Traumatic Brain Injury; Post-acute/Chronic Sequelae: Medical and Physical Problems; Post-acute/Chronic Sequelae: Cognitive Problems; Post-acute/Chronic Sequelae: Emotional and Behavioral Problems, and more. The CDC has estimated that each year, approximately 1.5 million Americans survive a traumatic brain injury (TBI), among whom approximately 230,000 are hospitalized. Approximately 50,000 Americans die each year following traumatic brain injury, representing one third of all injury-related deaths. The leading causes of TBI are falls (28%), motor vehicle-traffic accidents (20%), struck by/against events (19%) and assaults (11%). It is estimated that of the total reported TBIs, the vast majority (75%-90%) of these fit the categorization of mild-TBI and that approximately ninety percent ( 90%) of these follow a predictable course and experience few, if any, ongoing symptoms and do not require any special medical treatment. More than 1.1 million patients with mTBI are treated and released from an emergency department each year. Only a small sub-set of these patients (10%) experience post-injury symptoms of a long lasting nature. The incidence of TBI has significantly increased in the patient population of the DoD and VHA as a result of injuries during recent military and combat operations. In the past 8 years, TBI has emerged as a common form of injury in service men and women.
