Cost-effective, attractive enclosure Apr 29, 2009
By buru buru piggu If you have spare laptop drives around, this is a cost-effective way to make use of them. They are also good for general repairs and data migration. I bought a few to use for upgrading laptops and for use with my PlayStation 3 and Western Digital WD TV device as portable movie storage devices. Since these are USB powered, it reduces the clutter by not needing a power cable.
For easy laptop upgrades: Take out the old drive, upgrade with a bigger hard drive, then put old drive in this enclosure. All the data from the old system will still be accessible and you can copy it all back to the newly upgraded system. I've done this for several friends who've had their systems taken over by viruses and malware. It's easier to take out the drive and replace with a new one rather than try to recover their systems.
This product is what it is. It's just an enclosure. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. The aluminum housing is attractive and dissipates heat better than plastic ones. It's easy to open via a spring-loaded button on the front. The 2 halves come off and go back on easily if properly aligned (some other reviewers may have big thumbs if they are reporting difficulty with opening it).
The little green screwdriver that it comes with is very handy, so don't throw it away! I can't tell you how many times I've encountered small screws on my electronics that my other screwdrivers were too big to handle.
My only gripe is it blinks red when reading, but this is a superficial comment.
As for drivers: it needs none, unless you have an ancient computer. No modern USB storage device needs drivers. Your computer will automatically recognize it. I use this enclosure on my Mac, PC, PS3, and WDTV home movie device.

Perfect! Nov 11, 2008

I bought this enclosure to help me transfer my data to a new laptop hard drive and everything about it is perfect. Of course it doesn't feel/look like it would protect a drive from a fall, but for the price, you can't go wrong with this product. I highly recommend it.

Perfect fit Oct 30, 2008
By Dilip Iyer It was a little difficult to open the case. But my 2.5 HDD fits perfectly. CD that it comes with is in Chinese, but you don't need it at all. Plug it to your laptop and it works like a charm

hard to open Feb 21, 2009
By Glenn Jagdeosingh The main reason I gave this enclosure 4 stars is for the price. I paid approximately $5 for it which was really good. The case is really difficult to open. There is a button on the case which needs to be pressed. I could only open one side to insert the drive, but could not open the other side to insert the screws, so i didn't screw my hard drive to the case. The size of the enclosure is really great also. Assembly aside, for price and size, this is a good buy. Do not buy this item for more than $6.

Does what it's supposed to Feb 08, 2009
By megapenguinx I had a bunch of hard drives lying around and needed an enclosure, so I picked this one up since it was cheap and had decent reviews. There is no power cord needed, it's powered by USB and the case absorbs most of the heat. The case looks and feels cheap, because well it is. If you put your drive in there be prepared for a bit of a struggle to get it out. But it works really well and even survived a 5ft drop mid-back up. I'd recommend it if you have a few extra laptop hard drives and need the space.
